The Celestial Shields of the Eternal Flame

What started off as just See’er Shield Arts grew into something more when the first Sigil Temple was uncovered. Now, the shield-wearing guardians have become known as the greatest protectors and heroes in the land. The Celestial Shields of the Eternal Flame is the formal and elite organization of Celestial Shields who protect high-ranking members of the Divine Order of the Phoenix, and they act as the special operations squadron for when a situation goes extremely bad.

The Sigil Temples

The See’er think that the Sigil Temples may predate the Divinity, though more than a few Karu historians dismiss that thought as conjecture. Whatever the case on their age, the fact remains that no one knows exactly when they were built, or who built them. Scattered throughout the Outer Steppes and the surrounding region, these temples serve as direct conduits to the Pangool — the See’er’s incorporeal deities.

To date, 16 Sigil Temples have been discovered, and the See’er currently use them to train Celestial Shields. The Sigil Temples have become informal schools where See’er flock to learn secrets that had been buried for so long.

The Prime Shields

In the beginning, there were just Celestial Shields with no real distinction between those of different tenure or strength. The initial thought was that everyone deserved equal recognition for their service. However, a Celestial Shield known as Kalali of the East became the first to reach legendary status and changed the framework when he famously staved off a 10-man assassination attempt on a Chosen. After his epic display of bravery, he became known as the Prime Shield. His popularity soared. For over a decade, Kalali worked his way up to become the head of the Celestial Shields of the Eternal Flames in 38 D.A.

“Kalali won’t talk much about that incident. One time, we got a few pints in him and got to asking him about it. Drinking mate asks him if the story was true, if it was really ten men. Kalali smiled real slow and said, ‘You don’t hear any survivors saying otherwise, do you?’” — Amenell Os’ro, a lifelong friend of Kalali of the East
